Question:
I was climbing up and down a step ladder while re-arranging some storage cupboards before lunch. A few minutes afterwards I decided to check my blood pressure. I felt fine but was curious how it would be after the activity. It was 109 over 74 with a pulse rate of 75. Until I started low carb my resting blood pressure ran around 130 over 85. I’m impressed and happy with the improvement. BillJ 254/225/175 Atkins since 6/20/01
Response:
Yep, its a benefit for most except for the people who had low blood pressure to start with

Yesterday while watching the Today show they were talking about the Anti Aging Diet, which they basically called a low CALORIE diet. They said on this anti-aging diet it lowers your blood pressue and pulse rate. But they video they were showing while giving the report was an elderly couple eating a plate full of vegetables. Well you know they couldn’t bring themselves to utter the words low CARBOHYDRATE.
Response:
Its really both. It looks like reducing calories and carbs may prevent cellular damage. In monkeys, scientists had 15 year old monkeys that had the cellular damage/age of 2. Calorie restriction by about half and low-carb is part of it I suppose.

Eleven years ago, when I was pregnant with my daughter, my blood pressure jumped up from its usual 110/70 to 145/95 and has stayed in that vicinity ever since even though I gained an additional 80 pounds. I had one doctor prescribe a diuretic (HCTZ) for awhile and that brought my BP down to 130/90 but I ended up changing doctors and the prescription ran out, etc, etc. I’ve been LCing for about a month and a half now and have lost about 20 pounds. I went to the doctor a few weeks ago and, as I was hoping, my BP was down – 124/90. I felt pretty good about that. But the other day I was curious to see if it had gone down any farther, so I went to the grocery store and had it checked. 174/105! I checked it again. 167/104. It has never been that high. I would have dismissed it as a problem with the machine if I hadn’t seen 2 other people get normal readings before me. I am confused and disheartened. You really need to make a dr appt. They can put you on meds to lower it. It’s too risky to walk around with those numbers. A lady at work (47 years old) just had a stroke last week. It could have been prevented if she had gotten on medication, but she didn’t. Now she’s paralyzed on one side. My BP went down to normal after losing my first 20 pounds. Now it’s back up in the danger zone, and my doc just put me back on meds. Good Luck.

Thanks for your reply Terry. I measured my BP again last night and it was 147/98, so it’s coming down. I’m going to keep an eye on it and give the diet a little more time before I go to the doctor. I was just there a couple of weeks ago and my BP was 124/90. I’m sure he’d just take a wait and see attitude too before he’d prescribe meds. I suspect I may just be having a particularly difficult time adjusting to this WOE. I’m losing weight and my heartburn is gone but my PMS was horrible last time (I’ve never been so irritable and weepy in my life) and my BP is wacky. I think I’ve read somewhere here that the first couple TOMs might be weird. But if things don’t get better, I will make that drs appt.
