Question:

I’ve been reading for the last couple of weeks.  Everyone in this group sounds so supportive and caring.  So I’ve decided to jump in and hopefully get a little encouragement and support also. I am 33, 5′10" and weight in at 195 pounds.  I have tried Slimfast, Adkins, T-Lite, low carb, low fat, darn near starvation and every other kind of diet out there. The Slimfast worked as long as I had the shake for breakfast, the shake for lunch, and the smallest imaginable dinner consisting of raw veggies and no sauces, creams, oils, etc.  I lost 20 pounds.  But as soon as I started eating food (low fat/low calorie) again for breakfast and lunch I gained back 10 pounds within a  month.  Let’s face it I can’t go the rest of my life with shakes for breakfast and lunch. Then I tried the Adkin’s diet.  Lost 8 pounds in one week and thought this diet was the coolest thing since sliced bread.  Then nothing for two months.  I actually gained a pound back during that time.  In total disgust I threw up my hands and gave up. Then I tried going vegetarian and gained 5 pounds.  Go figure. After getting totally depressed I began to wonder if maybe I should just resign myself to being overweight and learn to be happy with it.    But when I look in the mirror in the mornings I am so disgusted with what I see that I have to turn away. So now what? I have gotten a group of ladies together at work to go to an aerobics class.  I am the largest of the bunch.  No leotards and cute little halter type tops for me.  I am also going to try AGAIN to go with the low fat/low calorie diet. But I need support from others in my situation.  Like I said you all seem so wonderful and I would like to be a part of the group. You will have to forgive my lack of internet savy.  I just found out about newsgroups a month ago and I’m afraid I’m not sure of what is proper and what is improper.  I guess I need support in that also.  Is there a newgroup for internet dummies?

Response:

Spot, Our profiles are fairly similar.  When I came here first, a couple of months ago, I was eating about 1000 cal’s per day, and not losing.  What I learned here was that I was in ’starvation’ mode, and my body had adjusted to this amount of food and was hanging on to every gram of fat it could till the famine was over.  What I have been really concentrating on since, is boosting the metabolism.  I have been eating sensibly, but not watching every single bite & exercising a lot.  (I am the oldest AND the largest in my step aerobics class), but I keep hanging in there.  Also I am adding weight training to my routine, as increased muscle will also increase metabolism. As far as the internet awareness, you look like a champ.  We have an FAQ (frequently asked questions) which explains a lot about where the group is coming from.  The big rules are don’t post advertisements (spam) and we agressively fight against this because it can kill a newsgroup.  Also, there are a very wide variety of opinions on issues related to diet (WOE – Way of Eating), and we try to respect opinions other than our own.  We all agree that you need to drink LOADS & LOADS of water. Good luck & keep posting!! Lila, Thanks for the advice.  I have been drinking loads of water.  The problem is I’m hitting the bathroom 4 times an hour.  But I’m getting lots of exercise walking to the pot.  I read in some of the other items posted here that your body adjusts to the extra water. I’m glad to know someone else has had the same problems.  It’s even better to know that I can eat more than two carrots and a lettuce leaf at every meal. As far as the no selling rule.  I’ve seen the responses to the "spam" messages.  Good for all of you!!  It wouldn’t be much fun wading through endless advertisements trying to find real information and support. I think it’s great that you are keeping up the step aerobics!  I start my aerobics class Monday after work.  Wish me luck. Happy New Year! Spot, welcome to the group.  I suspect there is more to your story then you have said because you couldn’t possibly cram everything into your post to cover all the diets etc.  you say have failed.  The first thing I would do, if I were you was to get a physical by the doc.  Rule out any physical problems that could be hindering your weight loss.  That way you will know that you need to change your eating and exercise habits.  Then, find a diet you can stay on for life and STAY on it.  Get enough cals and nutrients and get more healthy while you diet. If you aren;t losing or are gaining, then post your menus here and let our resident experts try to help you tweak it till it is working. Things like slim fast etc. are a lose lose situation and I don;t mean weight.  Like you said, it only works if you keep using it and who wants to drink that stuff twice a day for life.  Your diet has to be one you can stay on because that is just about the only way to have a chance at maintaining your weight loss.  Returning to your old eating habits will just cause what it caused before, weight gain! No.  The slimfast is a good way to put your body in starvation mode but not good for much else. Then I tried the Adkin’s diet.  Lost 8 pounds in one week and thought this diet was the coolest thing since sliced bread.  Then nothing for two months.  I actually gained a pound back during that time.  In total disgust I threw up my hands and gave up.

Hint:  The Doctor’s name is "ATkins", not "Adkins."  ;-{)  Lowcarb diets can be good but if you’re not genetically predisposed to carbs, they don’t necessarily work. After getting totally depressed I began to wonder if maybe I should just resign myself to being overweight and learn to be happy with it.    But when I look in the mirror in the mornings I am so disgusted with what I see that I have to turn away. We keep on trying. I have gotten a group of ladies together at work to go to an aerobics class.  I am the largest of the bunch.  No leotards and cute little halter type tops for me.  I am also going to try AGAIN to go with the low fat/low calorie diet.

Exercise is good.  But you can’t starve yourself.  Sounds like you were starving yourself on the slimfast and possibly on the other ones.   Paradoxically, you need to take in more calories if you want to lose weight. We don’t have "diets" that we go on or off, we have WOEs or Ways of Eating that you have to do essentially for your life.  So get off any idea you might have that says "as soon as I get off this diet, I’ll go back to eating the way I want to." You will have to forgive my lack of internet savy.  I just found out about newsgroups a month ago and I’m afraid I’m not sure of what is proper and what is improper.  I guess I need support in that also.  Is there a newgroup for internet dummies?

Yes, it’s called alt.newbie.   You can try news.newusers.questions too. So far, however you’re doing fine. Rule 1:  Read the FAQ.  You can find it and more resources at http://asd.dozer.com.   Rule 2:  Don’t advertise anything.  Ever. Rule 3:  Post a lot, because we can help you celebrate your successes as well as your failures. Have fun, pitch in, let’s try a new WOE and get on the program. —  Stack FAQ at http://www.geocities.com/Heartland/Village/4999/stackfaq.htm  339/309/wherever Death called while you were out, so I gave him your pager number.

I don’t know if I’m doing this right so if this ends up in someone’s mail box, I’m sorry. Rich, Thank you for your comments and encouragement.  I went to the FAQ and I will also look into the newbies group. The web site is GREAT.  I was so excited to see all of the people in the group and all of the wonderful success stories.  K in Cali’s story was very inspiring. I hope everyone has a wonderful New Year.

K in Cali’s story was very :inspiring. : :I hope everyone has a wonderful New Year. Thanks Spot.  I hope you have a wonderful New Year as well.  You may want to give lowcarb one more try since you did lose some weight on it initially. Perhaps tweaking your program a bit will help, especially if you were eating lotsa cheese :) You can read the Atkins MiniFAQ (at the website in my sig) I wrote and see if you had any of the problems I address in it.  It might help you pinpoint some problems that kept you from losing.
