Question:

I LOST 75LBS IN TEN WEEKS, THIS ONE WORKS.e mail me for details, thanks, lou – Hide quoted text — Show quoted text – It is easy to see that you have been on the low carb diet.  I tried that for a while too, and while I did lose weight,I could never quite make myself believe in the healthfulness of eating all that meat and cheese, and high fat foods.  Some of those folks are sipping wesson oil throughout the day, and yet won’t eat over 1/2 an apple at a time due to the glycemic factor. It just didn’t make sense to me.  So, for myself, I eat ALL the fruit I want.  Wonderful source of fiber.  Like Jacqueline says, who here got fat eating apples?  Enjoy fruit! Cheyanne Judith, my opinion is you should be able to have lots of fruit without worrying too much about it.  After all who here got fat by eating too much fruit?  It is the ultimate low fat high fibre food. I also believe it is important to write down all you eat and count calories. I have a ballpark figure of calories per day, but I am not overly fussed if I am a little over my range. Jacqueline Sometimes there needs to be more chlorine thrown into the gene pool. I’m considering starting a low-fat diet – I tried low-carb for a couple of weeks but it wasn’t for me.  I have a couple of questions that I hope some of you can help me out with. How much fruit can I really eat, and still lose.  Could I have a breakfast smoothie made from 1 orange, a slice of pineapple, half a cup of raspberries, with non-fat yogurt then a snack of a pear later in the day, or would that be too much fruit? My preferred diet is vegetarian, lots of beans, interesting grains etc.  I’d probably eat fish 2-3 times a week, with no red meat or chicken.  Given that could I eat 2 Tablespoons of flax oil a day and still have a low-fat diet?  I’d avoid cheese and other added fats. Finally how closely do I need to watch calories? — Randy and Cheyanne Port Townsend, WA, USA, on the shores of Puget Sound

Response:

The intake of fruit that you suggest sounds fine to me, it doesn’t seem like too much. Summer is approaching, with lots of berries and melons, yum! I would also recommend that you eat lots of nonstarchy vegetables (i.e. broccoli, cauliflower, zucchini, peppers, kohlrabi, fennel, etc.;) they are a low calorie and low fat source of fiber and vitamins, and they help keep you filled up. Your preferred diet sounds good, interesting grains are fun. I assume you mean quinoa, amaranth, etc. As for your question if you can eat 2 tablespoons of flax oil per day and still be on a low fat diet, it depends on how many calories per day you are eating. I don’t know how many calories flax oil has, but the definition of a low fat diet is 30% or less of your caloric intake should be from fat. I can’t cite a source, but I believe that you should not drop your fat intake to lower than 20% for long amounts of time, because of the need for essential fatty acids. It looks like you’re interested in eating "good" fats, so don’t forget that nuts, olives, and seeds also provide "good" fat; eat them in moderate portions of course. You ask how closely you need to watch calories; I found that I felt more secure using Dietwatch (available at www.dietwatch.com) to track my caloric intake as well as my fat intake. Maybe others here are watching their fat intake but not also tracking calories, so can advise on how to do that. With Dietwatch I can also track my fiber intake, and trying to eat as much fiber as possible does lead to eating healthfully. I aim for at least 25 grams of fiber per day; last month my average fiber intake was 32 grams. I am attempting to get that even higher. I have recently lost 30 lbs in nine weeks, 60% fat 40% water and muscle. I have avoided fruit like the plague due to it having insulin raising effects. If you must eat fruit, do not eat it at night for then you will never lose the weight. – Hide quoted text — Show quoted text – I’m considering starting a low-fat diet – I tried low-carb for a couple of weeks but it wasn’t for me.  I have a couple of questions that I hope some of you can help me out with.
